Filed Under (Boston, Day Trips) by Peter

Our trip to CambridgeYesterday we decided to go to the nearest Apple Store and check out new laptops. Naturally I forgot that yesterday was the release of the iPhone — for the uninitiated, don’t attempt a visit to an Apple Store the day of a major product release unless you intend to camp out in line the night before! We still had a great time and eventually ended up meeting Megan at Boston Common.Following are notes from the map to the right (check it out on Google Maps as well):

Our trip begins
We packed light this time — no snacks or toys, just a few diapers and wipes and an extra shirt, just in case.

On to Haymarket
We decided to take the subway a few stops to make the trip a bit more enjoyable. The mall is approximately a mile and a half away, but we wanted energy to walk around once we got there.

Short trip
We got off the train at Science Park and made our way across the river.

T-Rex & the mall
We saw a T-Rex on the way (there is a life-size statue outside of the Science Museum — Caleb loved it!) and eventually made our way to the mall. The Apple Store line was nutty — it seemed to stretch the length of the mall and was complete with a laptop for 4 out of every 5 people, and most had camp chairs.

Wandering
After a short lunch we wandered all over the mall. Since the Apple Store was closed for preparations and we had little interest in shopping, we made our way outside, pickup up a toy and a bone for Nadine at a nearby pet store, an walked over to Kendall Square.

Boston Common
After a quick snack of an apple, some juice and water, we snagged the subway and took it back to Boston. Megan had just left work and we wanted to meet her at Boston Common.

Whole Foods
Megan met us near the Park Street station and we took a nice walk through the park. Not sure of what else to do, we cut through Beacon Hill on our way home. Stopping at Cambridge Street we realized that we were just across the street from Whole Foods and decided to go in and grab a few groceries since we were so close.

Spilled Yogurt
We had a nice walk home, but had a yogurt mishap while taking a break near North Station. Let’s just say Caleb gave himself a yogurt bath.

…I guess that spare shirt wasn’t such a bad idea after all.

When we were back in the North End, we saw a few people from Caleb’s school, including his friend Francesca — they took a few minutes to check out the ants on the sidewalk.
